Why You Shouldn’t Shave After Waxing

Waxing can give you smooth skin for longer than shaving. Depending on the area you had waxed and your rate of hair growth, your results can last for several weeks. However, the hair will start to grow back eventually. Once it reaches a suitable length (a quarter of an inch or longer), it’s time to come back for your next appointment. Some women may be tempted to shave after waxing as soon as they notice any hair growth, but this is not a good idea. Once you start waxing, we recommend sticking to this as your only method of hair removal to keep your skin smooth, beautiful, and hairless.

Some reasons you shouldn’t shave after a wax:

Can Irritate Your Skin

Shaving can be irritating to your skin, especially if you do it too soon after waxing. Additionally, shaving can increase your chances of getting razor burn and ingrown hairs. Both can be painful and unsightly.

May Change Your Hair’s Texture

When you wax regularly, it slowly changes the texture of your hair. Repeated waxes thin the hair out and less hair will grow back. This makes it easier to remove over time, makes the hair less noticeable, and can lengthen the amount of time you can take between waxes. Shaving after waxing undoes some of this progress. This is because it cuts the hair at an angle above the surface of the skin. As a result, the jagged edge grows above the surface and feels more “stubbly” than hair that grows back after waxing.

Can Speed Up Hair Growth

Waxing removes hair at a specific stage during its growth cycle. There are three total stages for body hair: anagen (active growing), catagen (hair cut off from blood supply), and telogen (hair rests before falling out). During the telogen phase, new hair is beginning to grow under the surface. Waxing during the anagen phase is best because it removes hair before a new strand can start growing. As a result, you will not notice new hair at first. If you shave, you can disrupt the cycle of growth at the wrong time and encourage your hair to grow back more quickly.

Maintaining Your Wax

If you want to keep your skin smooth after waxing, shaving is not the way to go. There are many other steps you can take to maintain your results. Exfoliation is one of the best methods for this. You should wait 48 hours after your wax appointment to exfoliate and after this you should do so every two or three days. This removes dead skin cells and keeps your skin silky and beautiful while you wait for your next wax.

Hair Removal Mistakes to Avoid

Hair removal can help you look your best. Making an appointment with a professional waxer can help ensure a more pleasant experience and better results. It’s also important to establish a good routine and avoid some common mistakes that people may make when trying to remove unwanted hair.

Here are some of the most common hair removal mistakes to avoid:

1. Waxing at Home

At-home waxing may seem easier than going to see a professional, but this is not typically the case and DIY waxing can even be dangerous if not done properly. You could burn yourself, irritate your skin, or cause bruising if you don’t follow all instructions. Even if you are able to get the wax done safely, you may not get the results you would like. It’s easy to leave some hair behind if you’re not an experienced waxer, especially in areas that are more difficult to reach.

2. Skipping Exfoliation

Exfoliating is essential for smooth skin. It’s a good idea to exfoliate the area that you are waxing before your appointment. This removes dead cells and if you do it during a hot shower, it also opens up your pores and can help make hair removal easier. Exfoliation is also important between waxes to keep your skin smooth. You should avoid exfoliating for 48 hours after your appointment. After that period, you should try to exfoliate every two or three days. We offer high-quality aftercare products at our waxing studio that will help you maintain your results.

3. Shaving Between Waxing Appointments

We know it can be tempting to remove hair as soon as it appears. However, shaving between waxing appointments does more harm than good. You may be used to stubble after shaving, but with repeated waxes, the hair will start to grow back thinner. Shaving this hair affects that process because it cuts hair at an angle and creates a rough edge. Shaving between waxes can also increase your risk of irritation, including razor bumps and ingrown hairs. Finally, it’s important to let the hair grow out a little bit so it can be effectively removed at your next appointment. For the best results, ditch your razor and leave any hair that grows alone until you come back in.

4. Not Communicating with Your Wax Artist

It’s completely normal to be a little nervous before getting waxed, especially if it’s your first appointment. However, try to keep in mind that your esthetician wants to help make your experience as comfortable as possible. If you are concerned about any part of the process or have any questions, let your waxer know.

Leg Waxing vs Shaving

Hair removal helps your legs look their best, but shaving can be a time-consuming and frustrating task. Leg waxing is an alternative method that will keep your legs smooth and beautiful. Waxing has a variety of benefits compared to shaving and there are many reasons to consider making the switch.

Here are some of the benefits of leg waxing vs shaving:

Keep Your Legs Hairless for Longer

On average, leg hair will grow back within three days of shaving. Some women may need to shave every day to keep their legs smooth. This routine can quickly become annoying. Waxing lasts for between three and nine weeks depending on how fast your hair grows. As a result, you can enjoy smooth, beautiful legs for longer and won’t need to worry about hair removal until your next appointment.

Exfoliation for Even Smoother Skin

Soft wax, which we use for leg waxing, exfoliates your skin while removing hair. The process removes dead skin cells, revealing a softer and fresher layer of skin underneath. Our waxing studio also sells products that can exfoliate further to give you gorgeously smooth legs that look great even between waxing appointments.

Save Time

Although a waxing appointment will usually take longer than one shaving session, it can save you time overall if you shave daily or every other day. Setting aside a little bit of time to get waxed can make your day-to-day life easier and free up time for more exciting activities.

Professional Hair Removal

You may have had one or more experiences where you shave your legs, only to notice a patch of hair you missed when you’re already out. One of the benefits of waxing is that a professional does the hair removal for you. Our wax artists make sure to cover every area and provide evenly smooth results.

Reduce the Appearance of Stubble

Razors cut hair at an angle and can leave dark spots on your legs, especially in the first day as the jagged edge of the hair starts to push above the surface. With waxing, the entire hair is removed and you don’t have any leftover stubble. Hair can even start to grow back thinner over time, making future waxing appointments easier.

Professional vs At-Home Waxing

You may be tempted to try leg waxing at home, but this can actually do more harm than good. You could burn yourself if you make the wax too hot or could end up irritating your skin. Making an appointment with a waxing professional helps ensure that you get long-lasting results and have a comfortable experience. It’s also less hassle for you.

Soft vs Hard Wax

Waxing is one of the best hair removal solutions for long-lasting, smooth results. Although some people worry about pain, the truth is that waxing is a lot easier than you may think. Choosing a waxing studio with experienced estheticians can help make your appointment more pleasant. It’s also important to understand that different types of wax are better suited for different areas. Using the right variety (either soft or hard wax) can make a huge difference.

More information about soft vs hard wax:

A jar of soft wax in front of a pile of towels

Soft Wax

Soft wax is spreadable at room temperature and has a soft consistency. To use soft wax, an esthetician will use a disposable spatula to apply the wax and will spread it to create a very thin layer over the skin and hair. They will then use a removal strip to pull the wax off, taking the hair with it. Soft wax is the more traditional option and is what many people think of when they think of waxing.

Benefits of Soft Wax

  • Soft wax is usually the best choice for larger areas, such as your legs. This is because it is easier to spread than hard wax.
  • This type of wax adheres more to your skin. While this can be a downside for more sensitive areas, it does provide the benefit of additional exfoliation and can be beneficial depending on where you are waxing.
  • This wax does a great job grabbing fine hairs.
  • Generally, there is no need for any special skin preparation before using soft wax.

Hard wax in a wax warmer

Hard Wax

Hard wax is solid at room temperature and comes in pellet form. It must be heated up in a wax warmer before it is used for hair removal. Unlike soft wax, a strip is not necessary to remove hard wax. Your wax artist will apply hard wax in layers, allow to harden, then remove it quickly to pull hair out from the root.

Benefits of Hard Wax

  • Hard wax adheres only to the hair, not to your skin, reducing discomfort and irritation. This makes it ideal for delicate areas with more sensitive skin. As a result, this type of wax is the best option for bikini line and Brazilian waxing.
  • The heat of this wax can help to open up pores, making it easier to remove hair.
  • Hard wax does not leave residue on your skin and is easy to clean up.
  • This type of wax is excellent for removing coarse hair.

Creating a Comfortable Waxing Experience

At The Waxing Studio, our estheticians have extensive experience and know how to create a comfortable waxing experience for you. We choose the type of wax carefully and use only hard wax for the most sensitive areas. In addition to ensuring the waxing process itself goes smoothly, we also offer a variety of aftercare products to help nourish your skin and reduce post-wax redness.

How an Eyelash Lift Works

Curled lashes look beautiful and help your eyes stand out. However, it can take a lot of work to use an eyelash curler every day. There’s an easier way to get naturally flawless lashes. An eyelash lift keeps your lashes curled for up to six weeks. The process is simple and you can even pair it with tinting for an even bolder look.

How a lash lift works:

The Process of Getting an Eyelash Lift

The first step in the lash lift process is separating your top and bottom eyelashes. An esthetician will do this then curl your top lashes over a silicone shield, which will be secured in place on your upper eyelid. Next, a perming solution is applied to your upper eyelashes between the root and the tip. This will stay on for between 10 and 15 minutes. After the perming solution has had time to work, your technician will then apply a setting solution. This neutralizes the chemicals that perm your lashes so the process does not continue longer than it needs to. It also stabilizes the new curled shape. The silicone shield can then be removed and you can start enjoying your new look.

Why an Eyelash Perm Works

An eyelash lift works very similarly to the standard hair perm. Like the hair on your head, the hair in your eyelashes is made up of multiple proteins. The most prominent is keratin. This molecule includes an amino acid called cysteine, which contains sulfur. Two keratin molecules link together in a helix (corkscrew) pattern by connecting sulfur atoms between the molecules. This is known as a disulfide bond. Your eyelashes maintain their shape because of these bonds.

The perming solution that is used for eyelash lifts contains sulfur and other compounds. When it is applied, it breaks the disulfide bonds between keratin molecules. This makes your eyelashes softer and they are able to fold over the silicone shield. When the neutralizing solution is applied, new disulfide bonds form, and your lashes now curl in the direction of the shield.

Caring for Your Lash Lift

To help your lashes stay curled for as long as possible, it is important to take the proper steps to preserve the results of your eyelash lift. The first 24 hours after your appointment are crucial. During this time, you should make sure not to get your lashes wet at all. In addition to avoiding direct exposure to water, it’s also a good idea not to work out or go outside if it is too humid.

The good news is that after the first day, a lash lift doesn’t require much additional care. You can treat your eyelashes just as you would normally. It’s a good idea not to rub or pull on your lashes since this can cause them to fall out. As new lashes grow in, the results will gradually fade. After approximately 4-6 weeks, you will want to come in for a new appointment if you want to maintain that beautiful curl.

The Benefits of Professional Eyebrow Waxing

Your eyebrows are one of the most prominent features on your face and help frame your eyes. Beautifully-shaped brows help you look your best. While you may be tempted to try tweezing or even waxing at home, professional eyebrow waxing is the best way to keep your brows looking gorgeous.

Here are some of the benefits of seeing a professional for your eyebrow waxing:

Your Eyebrows are Highly Visible

Your eyebrows are immediately noticeable to others. It is nearly impossible to hide them if you make a mistake while removing unwanted hair at home. Since this area is very visible and has such a big impact on how you look overall, it’s worth it to leave any shaping or hair removal to a professional.

Get a Perfect Eyebrow Shape

Your eyebrow shape should complement your features. Achieving the perfect shape at home can be challenging and time-consuming. Our wax artists have the experience necessary to shape your brows so they are even and look natural. We can also give you tips for what products to use at home to accentuate this shape and help your eyebrows stand out.

Remove the Right Amount of Hair

If you wax or tweeze at home, it’s easy to remove too much. Your brows may take a long time to grow back, leaving you with an awkward shape in the meantime. In other cases, you may miss distracting stray hairs, which can make your eyebrows look messy. Our professionals remove just the right amount of hair so you don’t have either of these issues.

Change How Hair Grows Back Over Time

Over time, waxing can cause your hair to grow back thinner. It also becomes easier to remove when you have a consistent waxing schedule. This means that professional waxing can help your eyebrows maintain their shape for longer and you won’t need to come in for appointments as often.

High-Quality Aftercare Products

When you get waxed at our studio, we will recommend high-quality aftercare products that you can use to enhance the results of your wax. These can reduce redness and soothe your skin. Unlike when you buy these products at a store, you will benefit from the guidance of our experienced wax artists in selecting the best items for your needs.

Add an Eyebrow Tint to Your Wax

When you visit us for a professional eyebrow wax, you can also add brow tinting for a more dramatic transformation. We use semi-permanent dye to darken your eyebrows. The results look great and can last for up to six weeks. Our team will help you choose the perfect shade that is bold and beautiful. In addition to combining tinting with your wax, we offer this service on its own if you prefer.

Preparing for Your First Brazilian Wax

Shaving your bikini area can be a frustrating and time-consuming task. If you are tired of this process, waxing can be a great solution. Preparing for your first Brazilian wax might make you a little nervous, but there’s no reason to worry. Your wax will be over before you know it and you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits of hair removal that lasts for weeks at a time, instead of needing to shave every few days.

Here are some tips for what you should do to get ready for your first Brazilian wax:

Do A Little Research

You don’t need to devote a lot of time into researching the ins and outs of waxing before your appointment, but gathering some information can be very helpful to ease your mind. If you’re comfortable, ask some of your friends about their experiences. No matter how many times you read online that the process isn’t as bad as you think, it’s a lot more reassuring to hear it from someone you know and trust.

Asking around and researching online can also help you make a decision about which studio to make an appointment with. This is a huge factor in whether or not you have a positive Brazilian wax experience. The Waxing Studio has many five-star ratings on Google My Business and Yelp, as well as an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Another thing to check is whether the wax specialists use hard or soft wax. Soft wax sticks to skin and, while it is effective for certain areas of your body, it can make a Brazilian or bikini wax unnecessarily painful. By contrast, hard wax is designed to stick only to hair. At The Waxing Studio, we are committed to giving you a comfortable experience and we only use high-quality hard wax for our intimate waxing services.

Before Your Brazilian Wax Appointment

Before your appointment, there are a few steps you can take to make sure everything goes smoothly. The first is to stop shaving. This will give your hair time to grow out. The longer it is, the easier it is for the wax to stick to it without adhering as much to your skin. Once you see how much easier waxing is in comparison to shaving, we’re sure you will be a longtime customer.

We also recommend taking a warm shower or bath before your appointment and using an exfoliating scrub in the area you are waxing. Being clean can help you feel less awkward. The warm water and exfoliation also help open up your pores, which makes it easier to remove hair.

If you are concerned about your pain tolerance, you can take some over-the-counter pain medication about an hour before your appointment. This is by no means necessary, but some women find that it helps them feel more relaxed.

Relax and Get Comfortable

The absolute best thing that you can do to make your first Brazilian wax more pleasant is to relax. When you are overly anxious, your muscles tense up and the wax will be more painful. No one would argue that waxing feels good, but it definitely is not as bad as most people expect, and it is over very quickly.

You should also feel comfortable with letting your wax artist know about any questions or concerns you have and how we can make your experience more pleasant. We can promise that we have heard nearly everything before.

Waxing Aftercare

After your wax is complete, we will go over tips for how to prevent ingrown hairs and let you know when you should return for your next waxing. Our studio has many high-quality products that you can buy to reduce redness and soothe any irritation.

A Guide to Eyebrow Shapes

Your eyebrows may seem like such a simple feature, but they can impact how your entire face looks. Perfect brows can accentuate your eyes and bone structure. There are a variety of different eyebrow shapes. Identifying which of these best matches your natural features makes it easier to enhance your brows with makeup and waxing that will create a gorgeous look. Actually shaping your brows is best left to a professional waxer, but this guide can give you an idea of what to ask for and what recommendations our team may make.

An illustration of hard-angled eyebrows after waxing

Hard Angled

A hard angled eyebrow shape slopes upward, moving from the inside out, then sharply turns downward at the end. This creates a clear angle that is visible on the top and bottom of the brow. Hard angled eyebrows with high arches can make your face appear thinner and longer. This makes them a great choice if you have a round face. Too high of an arch can make you look surprised, so we make sure to create this shape using precise hair removal so it is not too dramatic.

An illustration of soft-angled eyebrows after waxing

Soft Angled

Like hard angled brows, soft angled brows have a noticeable arch at the end. The main difference is that instead of a sharp point, this shape has a gradual curve. If you have a round or oval face, soft angled brows may be a good fit. Either of the angled eyebrow shapes can help your face look slimmer.

An illustration of a straight eyebrow shape

Straight brows don’t have a clear, angled arch. They do become slightly smaller at the ends, but in general, they have a very uniform shape. This shape is associated with Korean fashion and it was very popular in that country a few years ago. Thick, straight eyebrows can make a bold statement and tend to look best if you have more delicate facial features. This helps to create contrast so your eyebrows stand out without becoming overwhelming.

An illustration of s-shaped eyebrows

S-shaped eyebrows start higher in the center and curve downward, then back up, and finally back down at the ends. This shape should have a subtle slope so it is not too visually distracting or erratic. Many people with naturally s-shaped brows try to smooth over the initial curve with an eyebrow pencil, but this shape can look absolutely gorgeous if it is accentuated correctly.

An illustration of the rounded eyebrow shape

Rounded eyebrows create a sloping curve that extends across the entire brow. If you have a square or diamond-shaped face, this can add some softness to your features. Rounded brows are especially difficult to create and perfect on your own. You don’t want them to become too round because this will look fake and exaggerated. Our professionals can help you achieve a beautiful, even curve.

Why Professional Eyebrow Waxing is Important

No matter what eyebrow shape you have, professional waxing is a great way to ensure your brows look their best. When you try to tweeze or wax on your own, you may remove too much and create an awkward, uneven shape. Our wax artists remove just the right amount of hair and can even help you find the best style for your face.
